Type Designer Adrian Frutiger once said “If you remember the shape of your spoon at lunch, it has to be the wrong shape.” While this may be a generally accepted wisdom applied to text typefaces, what if one deliberately decides to make the “spoon” memorable? Type can be more than just a tool, it can question our ways of communication, it can create meaning from within. In the lecture “Ways of Writing,” Tariq Heijboer and François Dey will explore strange, meaningful and sometimes wrong approaches to type.

Céline Jouandet is a French Brazilian graphic and type designer. Initially drawn to visual art, she specialized in graphic design – particularly editorial design, and typography — ultimately focusing on type design as her primary form of expression. She earned a master’s degree from ECV Paris in 2021 and participated in Type Paris 2022, and she now works independently in Amsterdam. Céline continually explores new forms and methods in the field such as calligraphy and stone carving. Type design has offered not only a creative outlet but also opportunities for self-discovery, connecting with others, and space for new experiments.

In this lecture, Céline will talk about her fascination with the presence of older forms in contemporary design practice. This interest comes from the realisation of the importance of her Brazilian heritage — in particular the Brazilian Baroque — in her graphic style. Céline’s exploration of heritage and rupture is very present in her approach to type design, where she gives past forms a new voice and a contemporary interpretation through the use of digital tools. We will explore these tensions between old and new by exploring her background and the methods she’s used in her own striving for contiouous self improvement in the typographic field.
